The story behind the image
It had been a long and hot day on the island of Tenerife in Spain. We finally had made it to the most western part of the island to admire the view across Los Gigantes, a set of steep cliffs, accessible only through a long hike – or by boat.
After that we decided that it’s now time for a bath in the Atlantic Ocean, at the Playa de la Arena. The main features of this beach are the large waves rolling constantly in with plenty of power, and the pitch black color of the sand (and the beach.)
In this image, you will notice the absence of color in the lower left corner. That’s because the water had twirled up the black sand of the beach, pushing it forward as part of the motion. As the black sand in the water basically sucks up the sunlight, if won’t reflect. An interesting effect.
But it does not impact the refreshing nature of the bath.
