Desert Air Flight Crew

While resting at the swimming pool, we decided that a scenic flight across the Namib-Naukluft-Park would be a good idea. So we asked at the Adventure Center of the Sossusvlei Lodge in Sesriem what they could offer - and decided to go for a 90 minute roundtrip. They would conveniently pick us up at the airstrip of the Namib-Desert-Lodge and return us there after the flight. - And here is our flight crew: our pilot Lindie (right) and pilot-in-training Marie.

Desert Air V5-AEM

Desert Air have this well-maintained 6-seater Cessna 210 light aircraft (registration V5-AEM) permanently based on the Sossusvlei Lodge's property. It's just a short flight to the Namib-Desert-Lodge, so we do the payment transaction and receive the security briefing.

Airstrip of Namib-Desert-Lodge

This is the airstrip of the Namib-Desert-Lodge. In order to lift off against the wind, we will be taxiing all the way to the end, do a 180-degree-turn and start. (That was the plan anyway. It turned out that the turning point was in a bad condition, and the aircraft got stuck while turning around. We had to shovel it free before we actually could lift off!)

But once we had freed the wheels from the sand, we gained speed and lifted gently off at 17:03, at first turning south for Sesriem.

This is the tiny village of Sesiem and the entrance of to the Sossusvlei. You can clearly see where the gravel road ends and the tarred road within the National Park begins.

Scenic Flight across Sossusvlei Namibia

Okay, I know that a photo is worth nothing without a caption, but in order to not bore you too much, I'll keep the captions to a minimum for the next 30 slides or so. I mean, we are on a scenic flight across the highest dunes in the world. The light is almost perfect for taking photos, and I hope you enjoy the results as much as we do. Next photo, folks...! :-)

Sossusvlei Scenic Flight

Our planned route is Sesriem - Sossusvlei - Old Diamond Miner's Camps - Seal Colony - Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck - Conception Bay - Namib Desert Lodge, and while flying above the Sossusvlei, the first magnificient dunes show up.

Scenic Flight Namibia

The dunes of Sossusvlei are said to be the largest dunes in the world. Seeing them from above certainly is an incredible experience.

Scenic Flight Sossusvlei

I especially like the contrasts created by light and shadow, that's why we went for the latest possible scenic flight. Unfortunately, they were unable to offer a flight into the sunset, but we got very very close. :-)

More gentle waves, created by the wind on the dunes. Great!

More fantastic forms and colors of the wonderful dunes at the Namib desert.

Sometimes it is quite difficult to see what the photo is actually showing, and how the dunes have been photographed from the air, but one thing is for sure: it is a quite unique experience. Definitely unmissable!
