Our stop for this night was Oban, the Gateway to the Isles. This is the view from the North Pier. You immediately recognize McCaig's Tower, overlooking the harbour. The famous Oban Distillery is located in the center of the town, and certainly another major attraction.

Oban Ferry Harbour

Another shot across Oban harbour. As you can see, the weather was still not too good.

Oban Caledonian MacBrayne

Oban is an important ferry link towards the Isle of Mull. The ferry, operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) departs several times a day for Craignure. According to the sales clerk at the ticket booth, you do not have to buy your tickets in advance. Just show up ahead of time, and you'll be fine. However, if you have a certain route in mind, you might want to take a look at the various "Hopscotch" offers from CalMac. For example, the combined ticket Oban-Craignure and Fishnish-Lochaline saved us £ 11.40 (for two adults, and a car).

Corran Esplanade Oban

In fact, the weather was getting worse by the minute! The view across the sound was disappointing, and the rain was getting more intense, so we were wondering what to do that afternoon in Oban. We decided for the obvious solution...

Oban Distillery Tour

...and went for the Oban Distillery Tour. This factory is one of Scotland's oldest sources of single malt whisky. The beautiful shop is accompanied by an excellent free exhibition. The tour through the production areas is entertaining and interesting, and at the end of the tour, you get a chance to taste their "Oban 14" whisky...

Distillery Oban

...and this explains the bright smile on Petra's face when we left the Oban distillery. :-)
