On our way to the east coast and to Barletta, we stopped at Matera. Matera itself has not much on offer, but they have a town quarter called "The Sassi". Thousands of people lived in this quarter up to the 1950s. The houses are quite unusual as many of these have been drilled into the mountain.

The "appartments" are dark and filthy, resembling more holes than places to live. Some of them are being restored today with modern equipment, some of them can be visited. We were on a rather cloudy noon in Matera, and barely anyone could be seen. It was really frightening as you can imagine.

We decided not to stay at the "Sassi Hotel" and moved on to Barletta. While we were there, a popular event was celebrated. The lords and ladies of the regions came and showed off their historical frocks.
