Madrid, Spain, at Night (2001)

Madrid, Spain, at Night

I shot this photo in Madrid in September 2001. It shows nightly traffic rushing on the Calle Alcala towards the Edificio Metropolis. The exposure time was 1/8 sec., so the traffic has just about the right level of blur to it. But there’s something special about the photo that you cannot actually see: it was one of my earliest shots taken with a – gasp! – digital camera, the Kodak DC-4800. This camera had been a front runner in digital photography, and I remember it to be quite good actually. Okay, the pictures were pretty small (3.1 megapixels – a joke today), but it delivered a decent quality at the time. Here are some more photos from Madrid. Enjoy!

Digby Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada after sunset (2009)

Digby Harbour, Nova Scotia after sunset

Digby harbour is a beautiful place (see my sunrise photo here), and this shot is another proof point. The sea had been very quiet that evening, so I opted for a long exposure time to close the aperture. The resulting image captured the peace extremely well, I think. While the look has a touch of HDR to it, it really is a standard image from the camera.

Antelope Canyon, Arizona, USA (2003)

Antelope Canyon, Arizona, USA

Antelope Canyon is situated east of Page, Arizona, and it belongs to the Navajo Nation. The walls are light red and change their color constantly, depending on the light that enters through a narrow split in the rock. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk through on a sandy floor. The miracle, however, happens during noon from April to September. Suddenly bright beams of light enter the canyon and illuminate the walls with a subtle light – a truly stunning sight! Usually photographers try to avoid other visitors in their photos, but in this shot from 2002 I wanted to capture them as they were trying to capture a light beam. This also provides you with an idea of the tightness of the space. By the way, to make the lightbeams better visible, you may want to make some dust with your hat. Read more about our USA trip.

View across Lago di Como from Varenna, Italy

Lago di Como, Italy

This photo takes us to the northern Italy – to the awesome Lago di Como in the Alps. I took this shot from the village of Varenna, and I always fantasize how cool it must be to just relax on that rooftop in one of these swinging seats, sipping a drink and watch the ships pass. Then again, this rooftop is very close to a somewhat busy road (from where I took the shot), and everyone can actually watch you relaxing. Would I really want that?
